Dress Code: All students must wear solid white, teal, navy or light blue cotton colored polo shirts. Eighth grade students are permitted to wear black solid-colored polo shirts. All students must wear navy or light khaki colored bottoms. Overview: Marco Island Charter Middle School was established in 1998 so that middle school-aged students would be able to stay on the island. The school is a charter school, which means it operates as an independent contractor within the Collier County District. It is a public school, so any student in Collier County is eligible to attend. "I think the community has embraced us as their public middle school. The community is very, very supportive of our school," Principal George Abounader said. The school uses the C.O.R.E. curriculum as well as the Sunshine State Standards as the basis for their education program. Currently, the school is a collection of portable classrooms. Ground was broken for new facilities in June 2006 and two permanent buildings should be completed by August 2007. The new buildings will have updated, state-of-the-art equipment. In the school’s eight-year history, it has earned the grade of ‘A’ from the Department of Education six times. Parents of MICMS students are expected to contribute at least 40 hours of volunteer time each year to the school, which can include tutoring, being a lunch monitor, chaperoning field trips, coaching a sport, or any various activity that helps the school. “Parents are very generous with their areas of expertise," Abounader said. “Last year we averaged about 9,500 volunteer hours.” The school offers a sports program to provide safe afterschool activities. In addition to competitive sports, the YMCA is heavily involved with facilitating the school’s intramural program. Sports offered include basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, baseball and cross-country. “The sports program is fairly unique to the district,” Abounader said. “We have a lot of independence, so it tends to be like the old-fashioned neighborhood-type school.”
