Did you know that in the early 1900's these birds were hunted to the brink of scarcity? There were tens of thousands of them and they were hunted for their beautiful plumage and used in women's hats, clothing, and other decorative ways."

He is regularly seen hunting in the Gulf in front of the site. Today he took his lunch on the balcony of our neighbor's building."

Irma Biddle snapped this photo of a great horned owl nest near Fieldstone on Marco Island. Irma writes, "We'd been keeping an eye on the nest for the past month. As dusk settled we would see Mama and Daddy owl begin their prowl of the night sky."

As dusk settled we would see Mama and Daddy owl begin their prowl of the night sky. Last week we spotted movement in the nest. The babies were flapping their wings, strenghtening them for their venture into the world."

At first we wondered if she was injured, however I suspect that an owlet was hiding underneath the bushes and Mama was staying as close as possible."

Marya Repko submits this photo of a bald eacle chick and parent seen at the Fakahatchee Boardwalk on US-41 about 20 miles south of CR-951 (Collier Blvd). There is also an alligator pool at the end of the ½-mile walk through unique ecological scenery.
