County residents still a bit trashy, but improving


Collier County hazardous waste specialist Danette Huff organizes a shelf of unopened products at the Naples Recycling Center store. These products were taken to the center by residents for disposal and are available for free to anyone who wants them.

Collier County Recycling Centers dispose up to 12 of these compact fluorescent bulbs for no charge. Compact fluorescent bulbs are energy efficient and last up to seven years, but contain a small amount of mercury which needs to be extracted at the recycling center.

The average Collier County resident creates over 10 pounds of trash daily compared to the average U.S. resident who creates about 10 pounds of trash weekly. Collier County Solid Waste Department officials estimate at least 50 percent of the items discarded in the trash could have been recycled.
