Man's best friend lost in Goodland house fire

A Goodland man got out of his burning home sustaining only minor burns, but lost his dog in a battle to put out the blaze Thursday afternoon. Ed Olson, 61, of Goodland said a fire started when he was lighting a candle and a nearby newspaper caught fire, then the sofa caught fire. "I tried to get the cushion out of the house," Olson said. He struggled and then realized the door was locked. By the time he unlocked it and pushed open the door, the fire had spread. Full story »

Wearing his class-A dress uniform, and with two predecessors looking on, longtime Collier County lawman and public servant Kevin Rambosk was sworn in on Tuesday morning as the seventh sheriff in the county’s nearly 86-year history. Clocking in at just under a half hour, the 11 a.m. ceremony was short and to the point. "This is an historic moment for Collier County," Collier Commissioner Donna Fiala said. Lely High students charged with East Naples murder point fingers at each other

Two Lely High School students stabbed a 51-year-old garden worker to death and dragged his lifeless body into a nearby stand of woods in East Naples, all in an effort to steal his wallet, according to Collier County detectives, as well as neighbors and an employer who identified the victim.
Juan Jose Barrientos Jr., 17, 111 Tomato Road, and Jesus Rene Garza Jr., 18, 113 Tomato Road, then tried to sell the man’s electric saw before eventually cleaning a car of the victim’s blood, according to statements they gave detectives. Full story »

UPDATE: Missing kayaker found alive and well

A three-hour tour it was not. A 21-year-old kayaker was found alive and well on Monday night, hours after his parents arrived at the Isles of Capri fire station to report him missing. Adam Davis launched his kayak from behind the Isles of Capri station around 1 p.m., Fire Chief Emilio Rodriguez said. His parents arrived after 6 p.m. to report him missing. Full story »
