The Lely Trojans won easily against Golden Gate, 47-20, on Friday night, but at times made it look ugly.

The usual steady Darian Hall ran and caught a pass for touchdowns, but also committed three fumbles, leading to one of the Titans scores.

Hall was held to under 100 yards for the first time this season at 77 on 12 carries.

Kicker Gerry Reyes was forced to make two tackles when he became the last player between the Lely goal line and the Titans kick returner.

The Bears, who had only one touchdown in the previous two weeks, scored two and registered two field goals. The Bears equaled Lely in first downs and actually out rushed the Trojans, 121-81.

Quarterback Dennis Marcelin was the difference for Lely, completing seven of 13 passes for a whopping 259 yards, compared to Golden gate’s 82 through the air. Marcelin also ran for two scores.

“We played well overall, but we sure were sloppy at times,” Lely Coach Steve Pricer said. “We will definitely work on ball security before we play our next game.”

The Trojans had some positive firsts. Marco’s Nick Thorstenson hauled in his first touchdown pass covering 20 yards. Marco’s Mike Snyder intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 31-yard score. Frank Pugh, who got more carries because he was spelling Hall at times, did well and turned a pass into a 64-yard touchdown play.

On the down side, Marco’s Levi Conroy injured his left knee while making a tackle and is doubtful for two weeks or more. An MRI was to be done Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury.

Marcelin gave up an interception in the fourth quarter that led to Golden Gate’s first touchdown since Sept. 12.

Titans quarterback Kenneth Mouton, who had a good night, hit wide receiver Brown Demosthenes in stride for a 33-yard score.

“That was his only poor decision,” said John Principe, Lely’s offensive coordinator, of Marcelin’s errant pass.

“Dennis managed the game well. He keeps getting better every week and had his best game. People forget he was a defensive player last season and this was only his fourth game at quarterback.”

Defensively, Errol Boyd continues to be everywhere. He made a number of solo tackles in the game.

Pricer told his players after the game, “This was an important district win. We made some improvements, but we still have a lot of work to go.”
