Lely coach Steve Pricer talked about life’s lessons after his Trojans fell to South Fort Myers, 27-9, on Friday night.
Actually, most of the players had already learned tough lessons on the field.
Lely had its chances, but couldn’t close the deal on at least three sustained drives. Five pass interceptions and a lost fumble kept them out of the end zone.
Workhorse Darian Hall, battling leg cramps from early in the third quarter, bulled his way into the end zone for the Trojans’ only touchdown with 5:09 left in the game.
Kicker Jerry Reyes kicked a 28-yard field in the first quarter for Lely’s nine points.
Before and in between those scores Lely appeared listless. Lely’s fans showed more energy in the first half than the players as the Trojans got overwhelmed. South Fort Myers piled up all of its 27 points in the first half.
On the Wolfpack’s very first play after the kickoff, quarterback Dallas Crawford tossed a short pass to Brodrick Jenkins, who seemed to have an after-burner as he sped away for an 80-yard score.
After a short drive, when Lely’s Reyes kicked the 28-yard field goal with 9:14 left in the first quarter, Lely ran and passed up and down the field, but didn’t crack the end zoned until it made little difference.
As the team huddled after the game, Pricer told a cheerleader not to comfort one of the players. He asked twice, “Who is feeling sorry for themselves? We won a big game (last week) and thought we were on top. We played like we practiced during the week. Life teaches you tough lessons. Games aren’t won on Friday nights. They are won in practice. Some guys practiced their guts out, but most didn’t. It showed I didn’t do a good job and I won’t make that mistake again.”
John Principe, offensive coordinator, said, “We won a big game last week and thought we were invincible. We did not have good practices and it showed tonight. We didn’t hold our blocks, receivers dropped passes and (quarterback) Dennis (Marcelin) didn’t have a good game. Their skill players played better than ours. (Wolfpack) Coach (Grant) Redhead did a good job in getting his team ready. They are a good team.”
Hall didn’t disappoint. He ran for 195 yards on 29 carries.
Defensive back Johny Fortin showed he had no quit in him. In the waning moments of the game, Jenkins took off for what looked like a sure touchdown. Fortin came all the way across the field, chasing Jenkins more than 60 yards before tackling him at the Lely two-yard line.
The defense then held on four plays as time ran out.
Defensive back Quinton Antoine and defensive end Moises Stael Dantes both recorded sacks on Crawford.
Emmanuel Eduoard, who missed last season with a broken leg, was injured late in the game, but waived off a substitute.
Lely plays its first home game and first 3A-District 14 opponent Palmetto Ridge at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
