NAPLES Manatee Middle School students were late to school this morning after their bus suffered mechanical failure around 8:45 a.m. and began to fill with steam from an overheated engine.
"Our transportation director reports that the bus engine overheated, which caused steam," said school district spokesman Joe Landon. "The fire department did disconnect batteries as a precaution in case of fire, but there was no smoke and there was no fire."
The bus, No. 582, was headed west on U.S. 41 East near the East Naples Fire Station when it overheated. Students evacuated the bus while emergency responders came to the scene.
The incident briefly closed westbound U.S. 41.
No one was hurt and the bus of Manatee Middle School students were quickly evacuated and on their way to school in a different bus with only minor delays.
