A house fire at 740 North Barfield Drive Saturday afternoon caused approximately $100,000 in damage to the two-story island home.
Within five minutes of the call, Marco Island Fire Rescue arrived on scene of the fire, which was on the corner of North Barfield Drive and North Collier Boulevard, reported Deputy Chief Chris Byrne.
“It was definitely a traffic stopper ... Every car coming on the island Saturday night saw it. There was smoke everywhere,” said Fire Rescue Chief Mike Murphy.
Neighbors told the fire rescue crews that occupants had left their vacation home approximately two hours earlier. The house was vacant and locked requiring forced entry, Byrne said.
The fire originated in the kitchen, extended through the ceiling into the second story and spread into additional rooms.
Officers from the Marco Island Police Department secured the intersections and directed traffic. Assistance was provided by Collier County EMS and the Isles of Capri Fire Department while East Naples Fire Department provided on-island back up in the event of other emergencies, Byrne said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fire Marshall.
