The Summerset Festival was a huge success with more than 3,000 people concluding the three-day event at Residents’ Beach. On Saturday, 70 members of the Marco Island Swim team held its annual meet, sponsored by the Marco Island Eagle. On Sunday, 64 sailboats competed in the Summerset Regatta. On Monday, more than 60 runners participated in the first annual Marco Island Eagle 7.5 or 3-mile marathons. According to the Marco Island Jaycettes, they cooked “tons” of hamburgers and hot dogs, while the Marco Island YMCA held a 200-yard marathon swim. Dorothy Josberger won the white chowder cooking competition, while Eleanor Florio of Miami won the red chowder competition.
The Marco Beach Hotel ranked number one in the current issue of the Best Insurance Convention Magazine.
More than 96 percent of the Marco Island Civic Association have voted against incorporation of Marco Island. The results came from a straw ballot mailed in the association’s newsletter. The count was 176-7 against.
Fred Kramer and Jane Paulus, both of Marco, and each seeking a term on the Collier County School Board, spoke at the Summerset Festival, along with a number of candidates for various local county and state seats.
Helen Shreve was the First Flight winner in August for the Marco Island Tennis Association. Flight 2 winner was Marie Durig. Judy Nolton and May Sheehan tied for first in Flight 2. There was a tie in round robin play among Shreve, Anita Borger and Emily Walker.
