The Marco Island Eagle Charter Middle School’s cross country teams fared well against Collier County middle schools during the weekend.
Competing against some schools whose teams doubled or tripled Charter School, the girls team came in fifth and the boys seventh.
There were two sets of races. Each of the 11 schools used their top seven runners and then there was a race for the rest of the teams’ runners.
In the competition featuring the best runners, Marco’s Christy Thorstenson raced to 13th, Sierra Rose, 24th, Joan Nguyen, 27th and Mary Ellen Morris, 31st.
“Lexie Lundquist was unable to run, which probably cost us finishing fourth and possibly third,” Coach Roger Raymond said. “The girls finished in the top half of the 77 runners.”
In the boys race, Stefan Langebeeke led the Charter boys, finishing 18th, followed by Tyler Canady, 32nd, Tanner Fulcher, 38th, Noah Konkus, 44th and Cooper Fulcher, 55th.
“In the boys race the competition is always very high,” Raymond said. “Our score was only 14 points from fifth and Cooper Fulcher was a little under the weather. I was very proud of the effort and I can see vast improvement as we enter the last third of the season.”
In the open race more than 150 runners competed.
Maddie Hague ran to fifth and Sarah Reisinger was right behind in sixth.
“Mackenzie Callahan, Casey Mendel and Adrienne Collins also ran very well,” Raymond said.
For the boys, Will Bott, Xavier Vecchio, Cullan Parks and Christian Van Bovan turned in nice runs, Raymond said.
“With more than 150 runners it was a fun race to watch,” he said. “Our kids did a great job.”
The next meet for the Eagles is the Celtic Invitational in Golden Gate Park on Friday.
The girls start is 4:30 and the boys is 5 p.m.
The boys volleyball team held its first match on Saturday, losing to Gulfview Middle School. No further information was available.
The girls volleyball team defeated St. Anne. There was no further information available.
