Fathers across the country are watching Florida’s new custody provisions (Marco Eagle, It’s The Law, Nov. 14). Shared parental responsibility is not new. Usually it means mom’s share is 86 percent and dad’s share is 14 percent (i.e., every other weekend).
But when a new law specifies 20 items to be considered by a court when creating, modifying or approving a parenting plan, millions of disenfranchised fathers are paying attention.
If there is anything more unfair than taking kids away from a fit and loving father, it is taking a competent and conscientious parent away from a child.
For the sake of America’s youth, I pray other states will follow the lead of Florida’s legislature.
