MARCO ISLAND Marco Island lost power Thursday morning when a crane hit the main power line to the island Thursday morning. Power was restored within about 30 minutes.
The entire island was effected.
According to Fire Chef Mike Murphy, the main line to the island supplied by Lee County Electric Cooperative, the island’s electric provider, was hit by a contractor’s crane at the city’s utility plant near the LCEC substation.
There was no permanent damage to any power lines, Murphy said.
LCEC spokeswoman Karen Ryan said the line was instantly de-engergized when the crane made contact with the overhead line.
“Once we were able to determine what happened, we re-energized that line,” Ryan said. She added the contact with the line was made just outside LCEC’s Belle Meade Substation.
City Public Information Coordinator Lisa Douglass said the crane operated by Youngquist Brothers Inc., a global firm headquartered in Fort Myers, was working on demobilizing equipment for the deep injection well being installed at one of the city’s water facility’s, the North Plant, located on Elkcam Circle near Windward Drive.
“Luckily no one was hurt. We were prepared to implement Code Red (the city’s emergency information network) but just then the power came back on,” Douglass added.
She said the city did use its Code Red system Thursday to notify 60 residents who live between Floral Avenue and Goodland that there is a water line break affecting their area.

Half hour full power restored.. excellent...hands off Marco, you dont need to ruin one of the last good things on this island-LCEC.
Perhaps you should wait till this AUDIT flushes out before you carry on with your bid to become the electric co.
Rumor has it your bonds are being called in and we're goning to owe millions to cover the brilliant purchase of the waste water plant..(thanx ACERI!)
