Here are some of the Memorial Day events planned in Southwest Florida:
• Memorial Day ceremony, with a special tribute to Naples’ own Specialist Richard Burress, U.S. Army, killed in action in Al Jabour, Iraq, Jan. 19, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Naples Memorial Gardens & Cemetery, 525 111th Ave. N, North Naples. Free. Call (239) 434-2652 or 860-0009.
• The Bonita Springs Fraternal Order of Eagles will host a Memorial Day ceremony to honor local military veterans, civil service members and 14 late Eagle members at noon Monday at 26511 Southern Pines Drive, Bonita Springs.
• The Marco Island VFW will hold its annual ceremony at the Marco Cemetery on Monday. The VFW also will line the street with flags the night before Memorial Day in honor of fallen veterans.This year the Marco Strummers will be doing some of the songs and a tribute to all branches of Service. This will include a short rendition of the branches’ songs.
• Military Families Speak Out, Broward for Peace and the Social Action Committee of Fort Myers will erect a field of crosses at 7 a.m. Monday on the beach at the Naples Pier, Gulfshore Boulevard and 12th Avenue South, Naples. Taps will be played at noon and the Rev. Jacek Mazur of St. Ann Church will say a prayer. Information: (239) 649-6863.
• Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, free child’s ticket with purchase of an adult ticket online at www.napleszoo.org through Monday, 1590 Goodlette-Frank Road, Naples. $18.75, adults; $17.75, seniors; $10.50, children 3-12; and free, children under 2. (239) 262-5409.
