A recent education report released in Newsweek magazine ranks three Collier County high schools on its 2008 Top of the Class list of the top 1,300 high schools nationwide. Barron Collier High School ranked 578th, Naples High School ranked 620th and Gulf Coast high School ranked 934th on a list that has been rating public high schools since 2003. Fort Myers High School ranked 135.
The top 1,300 reflects the uppermost 5 percent of all high schools.
The schools are rated according to a ratio devised by Newsweek reporter Jay Matthews. Matthews' ratio is the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school divided by the number of graduating seniors. Students in the three Collier County schools took AP exams, administered by the College Board. If a student scores high enough on the test, they may earn College Credit.
