Letter to the Editor: Yes to dogs in parks
Marco Island City Council Members, Marco Island residents and editors:
The Humane Society Naples strongly encourages and supports municipal public dog parks and dog walks. Good for the Marco Island City Council for their recent vote to draft an ordinance allowing leashed dogs in public parks. We hope the ordinance passes unanimously.
Don’t let a couple bad apples spoil it for everyone. You will see that dog owners police themselves and others in a dog-friendly park. It works well in so many other dog parks.
Many communities have found that having dog-friendly parks creates people-friendly neighborhoods. Dogs help everyone make new friends. And communities with friendly neighbors create neighborhoods that are enjoyable to live in.
With so many dogs in Collier County in need of lifelong loving homes, potential new dog adopters will feel more comfortable adopting a new pet in a dog-friendly community.
Good luck to Marco Island’s dogs and their guardians. We’ll see you at the park soon.
Thanks.
Michael Simonik, executive director, The Humane Society Naples
