Dedicated supporters of a museum for Marco Island can’t wait.
Can you blame them?
They have $3.1 million of their $4.5 million goal in hand and are breaking ground Saturday on South Heathwood Drive across from the library.
Marco Island, with all its high-rises, is not usually thought of as harboring much traditional history. But, not so. The Key Marco Cat exhibit at the Collier County Museum in 1996, showing off a Calusa artifact unearthed in the late 19th century and possibly predating Jesus Christ, remains a testimonial to that.
Plus, the Marco area was home to a thriving fishing/clamming industry. Lore of the Mackle brothers and their Deltona development company, as well as how the federal government put a stop to their dredging-and-filling development technique, are among other stories that will live on thanks to a museum of Marco’s own.
A museum for Marco will complement other hubs of history in Naples, East Naples, Everglades City, Bonita Springs and even Fort Myers.
Congratulations and good luck to the Marco effort.
