The Manatee Middle School track teams ran away with the first middle school track meet of the season.

In the past there was an annual county meet, but now there will be other meets with a county championship meet at the end.

The meet at Manatee on Tuesday was not part of the county league and allowed First Baptist Academy to take part. The Manatee boys won easily, scoring 68 points, followed by the Marco Island Charter Middle School with 15 points and FBA with 5.

For the girls, Manatee compiled 43 points, followed by FBA with 30 and Charter School with 15.

“It was a very good first meet and we see what out shortcomings are,” said Charter coach Roger Raymond. “We got to compete on a real track. It is very difficult for our runners, throwers and jumpers to get a real feel for the meets without a track facility.”

Charter’s Jake Dworkin showed heart as he came from behind to win the 400-meter dash in 1:05.

Charter’s Kit Fowler was a double winner. He won the long jump with a leap of 14-feet-2-inches and the 200-meter run in 26:43.

For the girls, Katie Hogan won the 400-meter race and the shot put with a throw of 28-feet-4-inches. She also was third in the 800. Mary Ellen Morris was third in the 400 and Mariah Lundin placed fourth in the 800.

“I was very pleased with Katie, Kit and Jake,” Raymond said. “They had nice wins and should make our relay teams very respectable.”

Because of time allowed all relay events were cancelled.

Depth was and is the problem for the Charter School.

Manatee was very deep in the field events,” Raymond said. “I am sure it will be difficult for us in the county league because of depth.”

Manatee hosted the meet, but the Charter School, with more experience, ran the meet.

Assistant coach Karen Raymond took care of results at the finish line; assistant coach Chris Black coordinated the staring of each event and assistant coach Craig Fisher coordinated the field events.

The Charter School’s next meet will be the first-ever Collier County Track & Field Meet at Golden Gate on March 15.

In another Charter sport, the Eagles Ladies soccer team edged St. Ann, 2-1. Amanda Lopez and Marissa Anguilano scored the goals and Cate Roche played a strong game. The JV team lost, 1-0.
