An ordinance authorizing a $315 school impact fee per dwelling unit was approved by the Collier County Commissioners on Tuesday. The impact fee, requested by the School District of Collier County, applies to all new house and condominium construction and is contingent upon an inter-local agreement with incorporated municipalities within the county. Commissioner John Pistor, who represents Marco, voted for the impact fee, which barely won, 3 to 2. The school district earlier recommended a fee based on pupil per household. Marco and Naples would have paid $249 per unit at construction time, while Immokalee would have paid $922 per unit. The proposal was considered unfair to Immokalee. It is estimated that the fee will bring in $3,500,000 over the next five years to build schools in the fast-growing areas of North Naples, Golden Gate, Pine Ridge and Avalon School.
A prime parcel of Gulf beach front property was sold to European interests. Therese LeClerq of Brussels, Belgium, reportedly paid $1,182,847 for a 3.26-acre site, comprising 249 feet of beach frontage, north of the Swallow Avenue and South Collier Boulevard intersection.
The island is still talking about the great Fourth of July Fireworks, but the Marco Island Jaycees and Jaycettes came up short of funds. The Jaycees were out $1,362, while the Jaycettes fell $200 short. Promises were made by groups and individuals to assist in funding, but most of the checks have not appeared.
Pat Baker showed off his 687-pound tarpon he caught in the Cape Romano area, fishing with Capt. Ted Naftal aboard the Tide Runner.
