Your News: Big Brothers Big Sisters hosting skydive event fund-raiser

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Florida (BBBS-SWFL) and Skydive Air Adventures of Clewiston, Florida will be having a skydiving extravaganza to raise funds for BBBS-SFWL.

The skydiving event will consists of 4 men, in their 40s, doing 40 jumps each on August 4, 2008. Sponsors for this event include Liquid Sky Sports, KenMark Construction, Victor’s Painting and Max Accessories. Corporate sponsorships are still available and individual donations are needed.

John Luvera has been skydiving for 4 years and has over 1,400 jumps. His ratings include coach, tandem instructor, AFF (Accelerated Free Fall) Instructor and pro. He was most recently featured in Gulfshore Business for reinventing his career from corporate America to now working as a consultant and instructor for Skydive Air Adventures, Inc.

His hobbies include weight training, mountain biking, golf, riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles, college football and his life motto is “I refuse to tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at deaths doorstep.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest provider of one-to-one youth mentoring services in the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Florida, a United Way agency, has been bringing caring adults into the lives of children for 35 years and serves children in Lee and Collier Counties. They currently have close to 500 mentoring matches through their school and community-based programs.

The results of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ efforts have been impressive.

Both national and statewide statistics show that children who are mentored are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and peers and are less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, become pregnant, abuse drugs or become involved in criminal activity.
