Letter to the Editor: Go vegan
Congratulations to Jeff Popick for losing about 150 pounds by switching to a vegan diet (“Marco man believes vegan philosophy helped him shed weight,” 6/26). I, too, lost excess weight when I first went vegan 15 years ago, and I shed even more unwanted pounds when I began eating even more fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, soy, and other plant-based foods and fewer processed meals.
Unlike meat, eggs, and dairy products, which are all high in saturated fat, calories, and cholesterol and contribute to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other health problems, plant-based foods are naturally cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat and calories. Population studies show that, on average, vegans are 10 to 20 pounds leaner, and live six to 10 years longer, than meat-eaters. The American Dietetic Association states, “vegetarians, especially vegans, have weights that are closer to desirable weights than do non-vegetarians.”
It’s easy to lose weight and get healthy — just visit www.VegCooking.com for tips on making the transition to a vegan diet. You’ll help not only yourself but countless animals as well.
Sincerely,
Heather Moore, Senior writer, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Norfolk, VA
