On the Eagle’s newspaper cover 30 years ago, Mike Canady delivered a pitch in a Gulf Coast Little League playoff game. His team, National Bank of Collier County, lost to No Risk Chemical. No Risk went on to win the playoff championship, with Marco’s Jeff Compton, Al Sorrenti, Sandi Roepstorf, Scott Strickland and Mark Calvi leading the way.

On Marco, an energetic, community-minded group of 75 Jaycees and eight Jaycettes, were planning a bang-up Fourth of July. Several merchants and Island organizations were designing floats for the afternoon parade. On the beach the Jaycees were building a gazebo for the musical entertainment and a jail for men who haven’t grown a mustache. There will be a $1 fine for the clean-shaven men as a fundraiser to support the event.

Twelve Marco girls were vying for the Miss Firecracker title. For the youngsters there was a watermelon-eating contest, egg toss and tug of war. For boys and girls 8 to 16 there will be a Gong Show. Jim Chute, Jaycee chairman of the event, expects more than 2,000 people to attend.

It was reported that Island response to a fund-raising campaign for Naples Community Hospital could impair the possibility of a 50-bed satellite hospital on Marco Island. Dr. Louis Nightingale, chairman of the Marco Island Civic Association’s Health and Public Welfare Committee, said of the $20,000 needed by the hospital to implement a sophisticated remote patient monitoring system only $7,675 had been raised. He said only about 20 islanders had made private donations, totaling $775. Major donors thus far have been the Island Rotary Club, $3,000, The Marco Island Woman’s Club, $1,500, the Marco Lions Club and Pilot Clubs, $1,000 each and the Kiwanis Club, $400.

Lely High senior Amy Disseler of Marco Island, represented the Marco American Legion Auxiliary at the state conference at Florida State University. During the conference, Disseler was elected to the House of Representatives as part of a government education program.
