Island Arts: Art is everywhere
I am so excited about the addition of this column to the Marco Eagle! I’m also honored to be able to provide what I hope to be informative and interesting articles. Our community is so filled with arts and cultural experiences throughout the year, it’s no wonder we need a bi-monthly column accompanied by a cultural calendar to help keep you aware of all that’s happening in the arts right here on Marco Island.

Marco Island is a small geographical area having so much to offer in the arts. As I sat pondering what I could share in my first article, it came to me. Since my commencement in 2003 as Executive Director of Marco Island’s Center for the Arts, (known to many as the Art League), I cannot tell you the number of people I encounter who tell me, “I have lived here for X number of years and this is my first time in here!” So, my first article is dedicated to Marco Island’s Center for the Arts.
I say this as a matter of fact. The ARTS really are an important part of our entire existence; that I truly think we take the ARTS for granted and at times forget they even exist.
Ask yourself, have you ever really thought about a world without the arts? Look around you. I’m not just talking about the art that may be hanging on your walls, or the music playing in the background. How about the chair you may be sitting in, the clothes you are wearing, the structure where you live or work, that logo or Web site promoting the very thing you are most proud of. These all have one thing in common. All of these things were developed out of the use of the creative and artistic mind.
Even when Marco Island was being developed, Deltona Corporation and the Mackle brothers understood the importance of the arts in our community. In 1977, they deeded the Art League as their first piece of property. Since its beginning in 1969, providing a learning experience remains the focus. However, this learning experience is not limited to teaching. Your Center for the Arts workshops are not just classes in the visual, dramatic and literary arts, but also include social functions and demonstrations, artist “brown bags” and “just for fun” activities. Your Marco Island’s Center for the Arts does not discriminate as it has offerings for all ages! It is a place where a strong camaraderie exists among the artistically inclined, for patrons who like to buy art and for those who just want to meet other people or provide volunteer services.
Sometimes, the arts tend to be forgotten by many. The contributions made by the creative mind are often an after thought. However in our community, Marco Island’s Center for the Arts provides an opportunity for everyone to participate and support. Yes, it is a member’s organization and “membership does have its privileges,” however your Center for the Arts is proud of the programs and opportunities it offers in the arts to all.
Take advantage of this opportunity now by visiting and supporting your local Center for the Arts today or make it a point to participate in one of the many arts opportunities listed in the Arts & Cultural Happenings. You will not be disappointed!
