It was a good news week for the Marco Island Charter Middle School sports teams.
The track team qualified members for the Collier County Middle School Track and Field Championships, while the boys baseball team edged closer to being the top seed in the upcoming Southwest Florida Middle School Baseball Conference playoffs.
The track team qualified members by finishing in the top four of events at the Collier County Middle School South Division Championships on Saturday.
Katie Hogan qualified in two individual events, the shot put and the 3200-meter run.
“Katie could have finished higher in the 3200, but she was in the shot put almost at the same time,” coach Roger Raymond said. “I saw that she was way ahead for the fourth spot and told her to start jogging to save her energy for the shot put.”
Hogan is also a member of the girls 4x100 relay team that qualified for this Saturday’s championships. She was teamed with Katie Sanford, Cassidy Penzo and Jenna Lundquist.
The boys 4x100 team of Jake Dworkin, Kit Fowler, Zion Kriel and Angelo Young also qualified by finishing fourth.
The boys baseball team downed Community School, 6-4, giving them the edge for the conference playoffs. The Eagles are 2-1 over Community School.
If Community School topped Seacrest Country Day School on Tuesday and the Eagles win Wednesday over Seacrest then the Eagles will be the top seed in the playoffs.
The game Wednesday is at 5 p.m. at Seacrest.
Against Community School, the Eagles got their first two runs on walks and sacrifice flies. For the game, Community School pitchers walked 10 batters, while the Eagles got three key hits.
Community School got three runs in the fourth with the help of two Eagles errors, giving them a 3-2 lead.
However, the Eagles iced the game with four runs in the fifth. A single by Kit Fowler scored two runs and a hit by Kenny Moss plated the other two runs.
Alex Galiana, Eagles manager, said Luke Bergen pitched four strong innings, giving up one earned run. Fowler pitched the last two innings.
Community School tried to rally, getting a walk, a single and a double steal to put runners on first and third bases with no out in the fifth inning, but Bergen saved the day.
Playing second base, he made a diving catch and tagged second base for a double play. A run did score on a passed ball, but Fowler shut Community School down in the final inning.
In JV ball, the Eagles remained undefeated, blasting Seacrest, 19-6. Two grand slams by Jeff Leonia and Corey Snyder and a home run by Adam Hurdis led the hitting attack. Sean Lampos and Will Bott took care of the pitching chores, while good defensive plays were made by Sam Huettel and Areeb Chaudhry.
