Letter to the Editor: Please attend

Marco residents: I urge you to attend the last two Rental Advisory Committee meetings on April 17 at 6 p.m. and April 30 at 6 p.m. at the training room of the Marco Island Fire Rescue station at Bald Eagle and San Marco.

An important incident was not mentioned in the Eagle article covering the April 2 rental meeting: A distraught older resident spoke and complained that after buying his house four years ago on a quiet street, he is now surrounded by four rentals and is going to have to move. A committee member laughingly asked, “Can I have the listing?”

These meetings are open to the public. Please attend and let the rental committee know that Marco residents are not a joke and we deserve to live in residentially-zoned neighborhoods without weekly rentals that have no enforceable rules and no reasonable limit of renters.

Since the City of Marco Island Comprehensive Plan is “to enhance Marco Island’s quality of life, environmental quality and tropical small town and resort character by managing growth and assuring a stable residential community,” residents should expect no less of this Rental Advisory Committee and the City Council.

Mrs. Salvi: If the Rental Committe and subsequently the City Council ewere to enact an Ordinance that legislated a reduced use of property for the purpose for which it was purchased, I guarantee that there will be a victorious lawsuit by every property owner that rents a home on Marco Island. Has the committee ever heard of Inverse Condemnation ?? Has the committee checked with City Attorney on what it is considering recommending ?? The Committee would be best served by regulating the landlords who would then pass any penalties to the tenants.
The person you mention in your posting has options right now to involve the Police for Disturbing the Peace, and the funniest aspect of the whole thing is that what the Committee is doing will not help the person you describe.
