In the Eagle 30 years ago this week:
Despite an ongoing lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who permitted the development of sensitive habitats, Deltona Corp. asked county commissioners to approve the “concept” of a new development that would require 18,000 acres of land near Marco, 12,000 of which would be designated as preserve areas. The developer’s vice president also informed the county that its lawsuit against the army would be suspended until it won approval for a hotly contested Marco Shores project.
As part of its agreement with the county, Deltona Corp. initiated a major street maintenance program aimed at bringing the roadways up to the county’s standards. Twenty-four island streets, the equivalent of five miles of roadway, were scheduled for sealing and asphalt paving after having already passed a preliminary inspection.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a possible arson incident that left a home on Addison Avenue gutted. When responders arrived at the scene of the fire, four or five young men were standing at the scene and left moments later without being identified or questioned. The majority of the blaze was contained to the rear of the house, which was formerly the home of Ernest Otter.
