In Friday, Oct. 5, the Marco Eagle reported that Marco Island History Week was scheduled to be held from today through Oct. 12 at Orion Bank. The weeklong historical celebration has since been postponed until further notice.

Orion Bank is gearing up for five days of informative and inspiring history lessons all related to Marco Island. Keith Dameron, of Orion Bank, came up with this unique series of events that will take place Monday through Friday, Oct. 15 through 19.

The bank, with the support of the Marco Island Historical Society, will be host to several historical displays and informative presentations by various speakers on different topics covering the early days of Marco Island. They will also cover the history of Marco throughout the years through live, visual and printed information explaining the many impacts that have made Marco Island what it is today.

Included in the five-day historical celebration, Dameron says, will be displays of historical photographs of prominent Marco Islanders and their biographies and how they influenced the history of the island.

There will be speakers in full costume making presentations at 1 p.m. each day for the five days, Dameron says. For example, people dressed as Baron Collier, Capt. Bill Collier and Tommie Barfield will make presentations at the bank and answer listeners’ questions.

Every evening at 7 p.m., different speakers will make presentations on subjects such as the Calusas, or the evolution of the Otter Mound Preserve. Some may cover the Deltona Years since the Mackle Brothers and the Deltona Corporation’s development of the area, or they will talk about the times of the pirates and conquistadors who were some of the shipping scoundrels. All subjects that will be discussed have been a part of the history of Marco Island, Dameron says.

“There are a number of other things that I’m working on right now,” Dameron says, as he is still finalizing the components of the week-long event.

There will also be historical books about the island on display — some of which will be available for purchase.

But each presentation, and the entire event itself, Dameron says, is absolutely free.

“This is not, I repeat, this is not a fundraiser; there’s no charge,” Dameron says. “I want this to be for the community.”

“The idea here is to do something for the people of Marco Island,” Dameron says. “I envision it set up as sort of a menu of events where people could say, gee, that pirate and conquistadors presentation looks interesting ... .

“I want people to feel free to come and enjoy,” Dameron says. “We’ll serve refreshments, and we’ll have some special things during the day and each evening.”

The different presentations at the bank will take place in a special historical room and in the lobby throughout the five-day event.

“This is an opportunity for the Historical Society to partner with (Orion Bank) to bring a very detailed program of historical topics to the community, and let the community come in and experience these things for themselves,” Dameron said. “There is an interest by people who live on Marco island to know more about the history of the island, and there is a lot of history to talk about.”
