A couple of weeks ago, I told you change was a comin’ and well, it has arrived. Starting next week, there will be no Monday Marco Eagle. No Tuesday or Thursday Eagle, either.
No, I’m not the Grinch. I’m not just taking stuff away. It’s the holiday season, and we at the Eagle are a giving folk. From now on, every Wednesday and Friday you’ll get a bigger, better Eagle.
But wait! There’s more.
Coming to a Sunday near you, a new free weekly news magazine that’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
The Eagle
Once upon a time, the Eagle was a fat, weekly publication that was hard to hold and hard to fold, but beloved by many. The real estate market was booming and some ambitious people decided to do what ambitious folk do: something ambitious.
On July 4, 2006, the Island’s daily newspaper was born. Instead of a bulky, paid weekly, residents were offered a streamlined daily delivered free to your doorstep.
The good news is the Eagle will remain free -— free as a bird. (Pun intended.) And it will still be delivered to your doorstep. Daily coverage will continue with spot reports online at marconews.com.
And let’s face it. That’s where you go for the latest news. When City Council meetings are over, you go home, fire up the computer and go to see what Leslie Williams filed just moments ago. You don’t wait for the print edition. When you hear that another accident has tied up the Jolley Bridge — you certainly don’t wait for the print edition. When naked protesters gather in front of the Marriott? Well, you get the idea.
So why bother with a print edition at all, you ask? Community newspapers are more than politics and breaking news. They’re in depth coverage, enterprising reports and something tangible for you to clip and keep. Is there a home on Marco without a box of newspaper clippings? For some reason, a computer printout just isn’t the same.
One of the first things I observed when I landed on Marco Island last year was that the Eagle’s journalists were so busy feeding this daily animal, they didn’t always have the time to offer the depth we wanted.
I invite you to add your comments to this story online at marconews.com. I will be reading each and every one. I want to know what you are thinking. You can also drop me a line at bgreen@marconews.com.
Now what about this Sunday thing?
Recently, we converted to a new layout program that required our staff to learn a new system and still meet their regular daily deadlines. Challenging? You bet, especially since we also decided to redesign our format at the same time.
To make a short story long, we decided a third edition of the Eagle was just not enough. We wanted to deliver something different to all South Naples readers. Thus this new Sunday product will reach from Marco Island all the way through the 951 corridor to I-75.
This new product will also be free, delivered to your doorstep, just like the Eagle. Naples Daily News readers on Marco and in all of South Naples will also find this new product atop their Sunday edition.
Look for more details on the Sunday edition in a future issue of the Eagle.
Merry reading and happy holidays!
