Collier County Emergency Management director Dan Summers has been honored with the Presidential Citation by the International Association of Emergency Managers.

The award seeks to recognize elected officials or administrators who have worked at the national or international level to improve emergency management programs or homeland security.

Since 2003, Summers has directed the county’s Emergency Medical Services, Collier County Medflight Operations, Office of the Medical Examiner, Emergency Management, Ochopee Fire and Rescue Control District and the Isles of Capri Fire Control District.

Before coming to Collier County, he was the director of the New Hanover County Emergency Management Department in Wilmington, N.C., from 1985 to 2003.

“Over the last three decades, Summers has led more than two dozen presidential declared emergencies in emergency response and recovery efforts and has become recognized as a national leader in the field of emergency management,” County Manager Jim Mudd said in a release.

Summers’ work has included implementing a rapid disaster supply support network utilizing tractor-trailer units for storage and response; a cable television audio interruption program; and he has increased training in radiological response, and with hazardous materials.

Most recently in Collier he has been coordinating the final design and construction of a $56 million state-of-the-art new emergency operations center.
