Marco Island has a new interim city manager.
Tony Shoemaker will take over as interim manager on Dec. 1 after the Marco Island City Council approved an employment agreement Monday evening. The vote was 6-1, with Councilman Chuck Kiester dissenting. Kiester had hoped to interview other candidates.
Shoemaker replaces Bill Moss, who has taken the city manger position in the city of Naples. A contract negotiated last week by City Council Chairman Mike Minozzi and Shoemaker agrees to pay Shoemaker a total compensation package that would be the equivalent of $162,020.70 per year plus an unspecified housing allowance for a leased furnished residence.
Council approved Shoemaker’s contract with one amendment. The city will now pay for the monthly utilities at Shoemaker’s residence.
Shoemaker, 67, worked as interim city manager for the city of Fort Myers from 2006 until this year, as the city transformed from a strong mayor to council-manager form of government. Shoemaker also served as interim city manager in Mount Dora in 2005 and has worked as assistant county manager for Hillsborough County and city manager in Clearwater, where he currently resides.
Shoemaker was not in attendance Monday night. He said at last Monday’s meeting that he planned to stay a maximum six months on Marco.
Shoemaker was the only candidate the city interviewed for the position and came highly recommended by Moss.
Moss’s employment agreement was also altered Monday night. His title will change on Dec. 1 to “consulting adviser” to the city and be paid on an hourly basis, which will be $77.40 plus a rate for his benefits.
In other business Monday, council’s big decision was to have another special-called meeting on capital improvements, most specifically bridge repair. The meeting will be held on Nov. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

It was all predetermined. Moss saw the handwriting on the wall and got out. Then he is replaced with his friend that he recommends. Our city continues to be in trouble.

It appears these guys just bounce around to different municipalities and collect the money. Talk about a good ol' boys network. I really do not think we need to pay out a quarter million/year for this position. To bad none of our elected officals will stand up for what should be our best interests. Sad very sad.
