A Naples-based group is touting next Saturday as a sort of “independents” day.
Sponsors of Naples Originals (Web site naplesoriginals.com), an organization of 46 independent, locally owned restaurants, is participating in the national “America Unchained” event on Saturday, Nov. 17.
It is urging local folks to patronize only locally-owned, independent businesses on that day.
The first-such local event, “Naples Unchained,” is part of a national campaign of the American Independent Business Alliance to highlight the effect that locally owned and independent business have on their communities, sponsors said.
Naples Originals is asking local businesses to enter their information on the Naples Original Web site for folks to find out about alternatives to chain stores.
Consumers and local businesses can go to www.naplesoriginals.com/localbusiness to find out more.
Lisa Kelly Boet, founder and president of Naples Originals, said in a statement that the group hopes to initiate an economic study that analyzes the effect of patronizing local businesses.
“Personal spending decisions affect the whole community, both now and for the future,” Boet said. “While communities can sustain a balance between chains and local business for the benefit of consumers, the research is compelling that local businesses preserve a town’s unique sense of place and contribute much more powerfully to the local economy.”
