Nine people are safe after a small passenger airplane that left Fort Myers early today had to make an emergency landing at Tampa International Airport.
The Cessna lost a wheel on its left tire shortly after taking off from the Tampa airport where it had stopped to pick up two more passengers, said Brenda Geoghagan, spokeswoman for TIA.
The plane left Tampa about 9:30 a.m. on its way to Harrisburg, Pa., and had to circle the airport for about two hours burning off fuel before making the emergency landing.
"It landed without incident," Geoghagan said. "The pilot did a great job."
The airport didn't have to close any runways because the plane landed on a taxiway, she said.
The plane lost one of its two left tires, Geoghagan said.
